“Dear Bill Duke,
I watched the premiere of your new movie “Light Girls” Monday night.
About a month ago, I watched your original movie “Dark Girls” with my mom and my nineteen-year-old sister — all of us ourselves dark girls — and enjoyed it greatly. Though it wasn’t the pinnacle of sociological thought, I appreciated the rawness of the film, the fact that its central thesis was rooted in the exposure of systemic racism and a certain symptom of it: colorism.
I was expecting from “Light Girls” what I got from “Dark Girls.”
So, imagine my disappointment when I actually watched the movie.”
